Variable speed pumps and running costs

A variable speed pump runs slower for longer, which uses much less electricity than a single speed pump moving the same water. Savings depend on your pool size, run hours and electricity rate. Check current Ontario rates with the Ontario Energy Board before comparing pumps.

We size pumps to your plumbing and filter rather than fitting the biggest motor available, which is quieter and easier on the filter.

Repair or replace?

If a pump or heater is over about 10 years old and needs a major part, replacing it often costs about the same as repairing it over two seasons. We quote both. Equipment problems found at opening are listed in your visit note. Book a service call on the booking page or add it to your pool opening.

Questions about pool equipment

Why won't my pool pump prime?

Usually air is getting in: a cracked pump lid O-ring, a loose basket lid, low water in the skimmer or a leak on the suction side. Check the water level and lid first, then book a service call if it still won't prime.

Is a heat pump or gas heater better for an Ontario pool?

Heat pumps cost less to run in warm months but slow down on cool nights. Gas heaters heat fast in any weather but cost more per hour. Many Kingston owners use a heat pump to extend May and September.

How often should I change my filter sand?

Pool filter sand usually lasts about five years. Change it sooner if pressure climbs quickly after backwashing or the water stays cloudy with good chemistry.

Can you install a salt system on my existing pool?

Usually yes. We check that your equipment and any metal parts suit salt water, size the cell to your pool volume, and install it with a bypass so it can be serviced easily.
